Riverboat Ron earned his reputation on Sunday.
The Carolina Panthers clashed against the Lions with a late touchdown to set up what looked like extra time in Detroit. While trailing 20-13 with 2:44 to go, Cam Newton led a six-yard 75-yard offense that ended with a touchdown pass to the DJ. Moore at the back of the goal zone.
But there would be no overtime. Panthers head coach Ron Rivera made sure of that.
Instead of sending the strike team for an extra point attempt, Rivera put his attack on the field to try to take the lead with a 2-point conversion.
The bet does not pay
It failed. Newton got good protection on the game and found that Jarius Wright was crossing the end zone, but his pass was high and incomplete.
The Lions recovered the kick that followed, and that was the end of the match. The Panthers dropped to 6-4 with the 20-19 loss, their second straight game and a costly defeat in a photo cluttered with NFC cards.

What was Rivera thinking?
Panthers kicker Graham Gano did not have a good day. He missed an extra point earlier in the quarter when the Panthers had the opportunity to take a 14-13 lead. He also missed his only field goal that day, a 34-yard rider who injured vertically in the third quarter.
If any of those moves were good, then Rivera would not have had to make a risky decision at the end of the game.
Rivera: "Our best opportunity to win"
When asked about the decision, Rivera was abrupt.
"I went to two to win the football match," Rivera said. "AGREEMENT? That's all I'm going to say about it." It was my state of mind. "We did not come here to draw." We did not come here to lose.We came to win the football game
"And I just felt like it was our best opportunity to win."
It's not like Rivera going out and throwing Gano under the bus. But this calculation is pretty clear here.
His punishing kicker, he decided to trust his Pro Bowl quarterback with a chance to win the game rather than play in overtime on a kick away to be certain.
Rivera has a reputation for playing, which could be expensive if the Panthers can not return to a winning track.
But was it a good bet? He would certainly be praised if it had paid off.
