SIOUX FALLS, S.D. (KSFY) – In honor of World Polio Day Wednesday, Paul TenHaken, Mayor of Sioux Falls, is encouraging the community to help eradicate the disease.
The Mayor's Office issued a proclamation at the Sioux Falls Rotary Club meeting on Monday.
In 1985, Rotary International launched PolioPlus, an initiative to eliminate the disease worldwide.
Since then, polio cases have dropped by 99.9%.
Larry Toll, former president of the Washington Pavilion and polio survivor, met Monday with the Rotary Club.
He added that although the number of cases had decreased, the fight was not over.
"We now have many parents who decide not to vaccinate their children," said Toll. "The immunity of the flock helps a lot of children, but fewer vaccinated vaccines, some of these diseases could come back, and it's a real shame." It's very shocking. "
Toll encourages all parents to vaccinate their children.
Last year, there were only 22 polio cases in the world.
