CONCORD, N.C. – The first road race in NASCAR history will take place this weekend at Charlotte Motor Speedway.
The Bank of American Roval 400 runs Sunday afternoon, using a track different from anything previously used in NASCAR.
Watch the video above as sports presenter Phil Orban was at Charlotte Motor Speedway while the drivers were testing the new circuit.
This is not an oval or road course; it is rather a hybrid that uses Charlotte's expressway and a winding course across the field.
[Column: Charlotte’s ‘roval may be NASCAR’s race of the year]The course of 17 laps, 2.28 miles has a vertical drop of 35 feet and everything is mysterious even after a few practice sessions.
The race will take place Sunday at 14 hours.
Qualifying took place on Friday so that the drivers of the Cup tackle the new configuration of the track.
A number of big names have struggled in practice.
Austin Dillon, Joey Logano, Ryan Blaney and Ricky Stenhouse Jr all struggled during Friday's practice session, from wall-to-wall tagging.
Sunday's race is a breakaway race in the NASCAR playoffs, meaning four drivers will lose their chance to compete for a championship if they slip.
"I think we're going to be surprised to see the crowd coming to this race," said Clint Bowyer. "We are trying something new. I'm glad our sport does it. Sometimes, nowadays, everything is oversold, but I think that for that we will deliver great things. "
NASCAR has seen a drop in attendance and a drop in ratings. NASCAR officials hope this experience will give a new impetus to the sport.
