The prince made the remarks while being interviewed for a new BBC historical document on his father's life, "Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70," which will air tonight.

About his father, Prince Harry said, "We could have had a very protected life if he had not spent that time in the army.

"To be with real people and to live these fantastic experiences and fend for themselves, to win jam sandwiches, to live in rather difficult conditions.

"I think it's pretty crucial."

Prince Charles had a long military career with the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the Royal Navy.

He joined the Royal Navy in 1971 and later served on the destroyer HMS Norfolk and on a pair of frigates.

In 1974, he obtained his helicopter pilot's license with 845 Squadron Navonaval in which he flies from the aircraft carrier HMS Hermes.

The Prince then commanded HMS Bronington, a minesweeper, before leaving the navy in 1976.

Prince Harry reacted to the comments of his older brother, Prince William, who claimed that the military career had little impact on their father.

When asked if Prince Charles had been "trained" by his service, Prince William replied, "No, I would say no.

"I would not say it shaped him, I would say it helped him form opinions and apply his personal discipline, but I would not say it shaped him as such.

"I would say that his form comes from his passion, his conservation work and climate change and that he found the alternative areas more appealing."

Prince Charles continues to work closely with the British Army and is currently Colonel-in-Chief of many formations, including the Parachute and Mercian regiments.

Prince William and Prince Harry both followed in their father's footsteps joining the army, both serving in the army and Prince William joining the RAF.

Prince Harry was deployed to Afghanistan twice in 2008 and 2012, although the first visit was shortened after being revealed by the press.

The documentary 'Prince, Son and Heir: Charles at 70' is based on 12 months of behind-the-scenes visits with the Prince and his staff.

It will air tonight on BBC One at 21:00.
