ROTORUA, New Zealand – Prince Harry and his wife Meghan examined the kiwi bird's navel, nostrils and whiskers and named two tiny chicks on the last day of their 16-day Pacific tour South.
The Duke and Duchess of Sussex visited a kiwifruit hatchery in the city of Rotorua on Wednesday and learned about the threatened bird breeding program, which is considered a national icon.
They gave the 3-day kiwi chicks Maori indigenous names: "Koha" meaning "gift" and "Tihei" meaning "sneeze", from Maori saying "tihei mauri ora" meaning "sneeze of life" or the right to speak. The names were neutral because their gender was not yet identified.
The couple also visited a "marae", Maori meeting place, went on a public walk and walked through a redwood forest while it was enjoying a good time. sunny weather after his stay in New Zealand was covered with rain.
At marae Te Papaiouru, the couple attended an official welcoming ceremony and lunch, and each received striking Maori capes, or "korowai".
Harry and Meghan arrived in New Zealand on Sunday after a first visit to Australia, Fiji and Tonga. During the public tours, they were greeted by hundreds of enthusiastic fans.
Prime Minister Jacinda Ardern said this week that there seems to be little appetite to turn New Zealand into a constitutional monarchy that recognizes the British Queen Elizabeth II as a republic.
"I do not understand from the New Zealand public that this is high on their agenda. This is an issue they consider so important that it needs to be discussed in the current context in New Zealand, "she said. "And I take my wheel."
During her trip, Meghan showed that she was ready to continue talking about feminist issues in her new role as royal. In Wellington, she delivered a speech congratulating the country for being the first in the world to allow women to vote about 125 years ago.
