Mike Stoops finally came out as Oklahoma's defense coordinator shortly after yielding 48 points to Texas and a few months after costing the Sooners at the National Championship. And its temporary replacement is official:
"Ruffin (McNeill) has an impressive resume," said the head coach of the OU, Lincoln Riley. "That's why I wanted to start with our staff. I trust his knowledge and his leadership. Bob has a lot of experience in very good programs and also has a list of achievements that will help him to intervene and have an immediate impact. We are lucky to have these men in our program. They will be ready to work in new roles immediately. "
The Sooners are also among their assistants ex-ladies of Notre Dame and Nebraska DC, Bob Diaco. He will add external linebackers to his responsibilities.
McNeill is the former head coach of East Carolina who has already hired Riley as offensive coordinator. After the ECU fished him mysteriously – he had led three consecutive trips, but the Pirates are probably in their third consecutive losing season without him – he became an assistant head coach of OR, also driving the defensive tackles of the Sooners.
He has experience as a defensive coordinator in four different schools, including Texas Tech.
I know the connotations of saying "he led Texas Tech's defense". Stay with me.
McNeill inherited a 2007 TTU defense that ranked 69th in the S & P + rankings. His 2009 defense ranked # 27 in the same category and # 24 in yards allowed per game. He showed that it was possible to combine a competent defense with a Mike Leach inspired air raid attack in the Big 12 , and that this skill would be a big step forward for the Sooners, who had S & P + 's # 101 defense in 2017 – NUMBER HUNDRED # 100, AND THE RESPONSIBLE GUY HAS REMAINED – and not much better in 2018.
Brent Venables does not come (back) through this door, but I think McNeill is the best choice available for OR.
