Add Bryce Harper to the list of players on which the New York Yankees accept passes.
The Yankees are unlikely to sue the Washington Nationals championship player this season as a free agent, said Andy Martino of SportsNet in New York on Monday, citing Major League Baseball sources. Harper should be the most sought-after free agent on the market and his future will be one of the major scenarios of the MLB off-season. But the Yankees may not be among the protagonists of the lawsuit against Harper, as they decided last week, during their prospecting meetings, that their post-season strategy should not be focused on the acquisition of another player.
"But the Yankees' early feeling is that Harper just does not fit," Martino wrote. "While they could use the left-handed bat in a very heavy right-handed formation, they feel that their field spots and DH are being talked about.
"The Yankees have many opening and turning points to fill, and their focus at the start of the season is more pitching.
Harper, 25, spent his entire career at the Nationals but he questioned his future with the team last month in an Instagram post in which he thanked DC fans. That leaves the Philadelphia Phillies in the forefront of contenders to sign Harper on a breathtaking contract.
Martino also announced Monday that the Yankees were "lukewarm" with the idea of signing Manny Machado, who spent part of the season recently concluded with the Baltimore Orioles and the Los Angeles Dodgers.
