CHICAGO (AP) – Chicago Cubs shortstop Addison Russell will miss the rest of the season as Major League Baseball investigates allegations of spousal abuse by his ex-wife.
MLB and the Players' Association have agreed to extend their administrative leave from four days to Sunday. Russell was placed on administrative leave on September 21st.
Melisa Reidy alleged years of physical and emotional abuse, which he denied.
Russell can challenge the leave before an arbitrator. He continues to receive his salary of $ 3.2 million.
Chicago won its fourth consecutive appearance in the playoffs. The 24-year-old has an average of .250 with five homers and 38 RBIs. He was an All-Star two years ago and helped the Cubs win their first World Series title since 1908.
