Russian scientists plan to bring back woolly mammoths

PanARMENIAN.Net – There are projects for scientists in Russia to try to bring woolly mammoths back to extinction.

It may sound a bit like Jurassic Park but it's a serious project, says the BBC.

The experiments will involve researching and studying entire cells in the remains of well-preserved ancient animals, such as mammoths, to see if it is possible to clone them after their extinction.

The research will take place on the territory of Yakutia, officially called the Republic of Sakha, part of the Russian Federation.

This is an incredibly large area with almost half located in the Arctic Circle.

The freezing temperatures mean that a number of ancient animals have been found in the permafrost.

Permafrost is a thick layer of underground soil that remains below the freezing point throughout the year.
