PISCATAWAY, N.J. – Rutgers coach C. Vivian Stringer has joined an exclusive club with 1,000 wins.
Stringer became the fifth Division I women's basketball coach to take the lead and her sixth overall when the Scarlet Knights defeated Central Connecticut State 73-44 on Tuesday night.
The Hall of Fame coach joined Pat Summitt, Geno Auriemma, Tara VanDerveer and Sylvia Hatchell in the 1,000-victory club. Division II coach Barbara Stevens has also won more than 1,000 games. Stringer, 70, is the first African-American coach to reach this milestone.
As the last few seconds passed, the 4,583 fans held up placards bearing the inscription "CVSK" and chanting the coach's name. When the final ring sounded, red and white confetti fell on the ground. His team placed the confetti in a bucket of Gatorade and threw them over his head.
Video tributes from all the other living members of Division I of the 1,000-victory club were played while Stringer was sitting under balloons spelling out CVS1K.
The Hall of Fame coach began her career at Cheyney State in 1971 before settling in Iowa and finally Rutgers in 1995. Several of her former players were present to witness the victory. . She is 1000-402 in her career. New Jersey governor Phil Murphy was also sitting on the side of the historic victory.
South Carolina coach Dawn Staley also traveled to New Jersey with her staff, including Jolette Law, Stringer's assistant at Rutgers for many years and playing for her in Iowa. The Staley Gamecocks will play Thursday against Clemson. She added that she did not doubt that she should be at Rutgers for this match with all that Stringer has represented for African-American coaches.
Although Stringer remembers many victories during her 48-year coaching career, she does not remember for the first time at Cheyney State. In fact, no one can remember exactly who his team beat to get that first win. Stringer laughs now, claiming that she had no idea that she would still coach nearly five decades later and that she would win 1,000 games.
Although Stringer had five attempts to win the # 900 victory in 2013, his team took the first step. The Scarlet Knights (3-0) scored 10 of the first 13 points and have never regretted the creation of a 37-17 lead at halftime.
Before the match, Stringer was worried that his team would be under a lot of pressure to win with so many people coming to celebrate this momentous victory. His team ensured that they did not go home disappointed. Caitlin Jenkins had 14 points and 12 rebounds to lead the Scarlet Knights.
Kiana Patterson led Central Connecticut State with 25 points, including the 1,000th of her career.
