LAWRENCE, Kan. (AP) – Bryce Torneden and Mike Lee intercepted touchdown touchdowns and Kansas defensive ended with three picks and recovered three fumbles en route to a 55-14 win over Rutgers on Saturday, the first return of the Jayhawks wins against opponents of FBS since 2009.
The Turnstars were caught off guard by the Scarlet Knights from the start as Torneden jumped past Artur Sitkowski's pass on Rutgers' second run and returned 39 yards to score. Torneden was back at the next outing, recovering a fumble by Jonathan Hilliman who set a goal on the pitch.
At the start of the second quarter, Lee took a pass on the sideline and scored for a 23-7 lead, squeezing 31 yards past several Knights in the end zone.
Real freshman Pooka Williams was the star striker, the anchor of a solid ground game for Kansas, who ran for 400 yards and scored four times. Finishing with 158 yards, including a nearly 52-yard run, Williams has 283 yards and three touchdowns in his first two college games.
Miles Kendrick and Peyton Bender both spent quarterback for Kansas, but Kendrick played a much bigger role in the previous weeks thanks to a solid game. He was responsible for the Jayhawks' only score in the air, a bottom line lost at the head of Jeremiah Booker who lost his shoe by landing in the corner of the end zone. Kendrick also ran for a score of 8 yards in the third.
The special teams were one of the few positives for Rutgers, as Deonte Roberts blocked the Kansas field trial in the first quarter and had 64 yards for the touchdown. The Scarlet Knights blocked another field goal later in the quarter but did not earn any points.
Sitkowski finished the match with just 47 yards and three interceptions before being replaced by Gio Rescigno in the third quarter. Raheem Blackshear led Rutgers on the run with 102 yards, and Hilliman also added a point on the floor.
