WASHINGTON – Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is in the hospital after falling in his office on Wednesday night, the court said in a statement released on Thursday.
Ginsburg, 85, returned home after the fall but continued to experience "overnight discomfort" and went to George Washington University Hospital early Thursday. The tests revealed that she had fractured three ribs and that she "had been admitted for observation and treatment," according to the release.
After being appointed by former President Bill Clinton in 1993, Ginsburg, a senior magistrate of the court, has served in the high court for more than 25 years. She is one of the liberal court judges.
"I feel good" at age 85: Judge Ruth Bader Ginsburg refuses retirement
Earlier this year, Ginsburg announced plans to stay on the bench for at least five years.
"I'm now 85," Ginsburg said in July, according to CNN. "My senior colleague, Judge John Paul Stevens, he resigned at age 90, so I think I have at least five years left."
Given his age, some Democrats have expressed concerns about his health. President Donald Trump has appointed two judges to the Supreme Court since he took office, and a new opening of the seat could ensure the court's conservative control for decades.
"I pray for Ruth Bader Ginsberg every day," said Sen. Bob Menendez, D-N.J. "We can not allow another Supreme Court judge to be appointed and passed to the Senate by this president, otherwise we will lose this court for more than a generation."
The second woman appointed to court – Judge Sandra Day O. Connor became the first in 1981 – Ginsburg is a legend among women's rights advocates. She expressed support for the #MeToo movement.
In recent years, she has gained celebrity status among the progressives – who call her with love as the "Notorious RBG" – and was the subject of a recent documentary, "RBG ". Her biography is the subject of a forthcoming feature, "On the basis of sex", in which she is performed by actress Felicity Jones.
