Everyone gets up, it's time to slam again. We have a real jam falling. Welcome to another "Space Jam".
According to an announcement released by Springhill Entertainment on Wednesday, LeBron James' production company, Michael Jordan's feature film and Looney Tunes stars, published in 1996, has had a lot of ink flowing.
The role of Mr. James in the film is unclear, but it's a safe bet that he'll be the star and that several other N.B.A. the players will make cameos. Terence Nance ("Random Acts of Flyness" from HBO) directed and Ryan Coogler, the director of the very popular "Black Panther", will be a producer.
"The collaboration between Space Jam is more than just the collaboration between Looney Tunes and me," said James in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter. I just want kids to understand how empowered they are and how empowered they can be if they do not give up on their dreams. And I think Ryan did it for a lot of people.
Other recent incursions of Mr. James in the entertainment world include "The Shop", an HBO show in which he has held hearings in hair salons to discuss current issues. He was also executive producer of the program. His name appears on several other upcoming projects, including the documentary HBO Sports "Student Athlete", which will air next month, and a series of 10 episodes, "Million Dollar Mile", which will be broadcast on CBS. There is also "Shut Up and Dribble", a three-part documentary about the role of athlete activism.
Many others N.B.A. players have made the leap to content creation. Andre Iguodala announced a partnership with the Cheddar network last year. Kyrie Irving starred in "Uncle Drew," based on a series of Pepsi commercials that he helped create. Kobe Bryant, now retired, won an Oscar last year for the best animated short with "Dear Basketball".
The sequel to "Space Jam" has been told for years. Justin Lin, best known for his work on the franchise "The Fast and the Furious," would have directed the film in 2016. The same year, Blake Griffin and Jimmy Butler starred in an advertisement of Foot Locker and Air Jordan featuring Bugs Bunny and referring to the Monstars, the bad guys in the original movie. The Wrap reported rumors about Nance's involvement last month.
According to the Hollywood Reporter, filming will begin next summer after NB. season. That makes sense, since Mr. James also has his day job: trying to bring his new team, the Los Angeles Lakers, back to a championship.
