The Miami Dolphins had a surprise injury designation listed for their game in Week 6 against the Chicago Bears on Friday afternoon. The team listed quarterback Ryan Tannehill as questionable to play on Sunday due to a shoulder injury. Tannehill was a full participant in practice on Wednesday and Thursday before he was listed as limited on Friday. He is backed up by Brock Osweiler and David Fales.

Tannehill has thrown for 972 yards with eight touchdowns and five interceptions this season. He is completing 65.9 percent of those passes and has a quarterback rating of 92.9. He has also carried the ball 19 times for 91 yards. When head coach Adam Gase met with the media on Friday he did not mention Tannehill and his injury. The Dolphins list his ailment as a right shoulder injury.

The young quarterback was the eighth overall pick in the 2012 draft by the Dolphins out of Texas A&M. He started all 16 games as a rookie and threw for 3,294 yards with 12 touchdowns and 13 interceptions. He also ran the ball 49 times for 211 yards with two rushing touchdowns. He backed that up the following year by throwing for 3,913 yards with 24 touchdowns to 17 interceptions. He went over the 4,000-yard passing mark in 2014 and threw 27 touchdowns to 12 interceptions. He started 16 games in 2015 and threw for 4,208 yards with 24 touchdowns and 12 interceptions.

Tannehill missed three games due to injury in 2016 but finished the year by throwing for 2,995 yards with 19 touchdowns and 12 interceptions. He tore his ACL last August and was placed on injured reserve. Former Bears quarterback Jay Cutler took over his starting job that season. Tannehill then returned this offseason to the organization as the clear-cut starter.

Having no Tannehill on Sunday would obviously be a benefit for the Bears. Osweiler was a second-round pick of the Denver Broncos in 2012 and was expected to push to be a starter for the organization. He saw his most extensive work at the quarterback position in 2015, going 5-2 as a starter while throwing for 1,967 yards with 10 touchdowns and six interceptions. He became a free agent the following offseason and signed a four-year deal worth $72 million with $37 million guaranteed with the Houston Texans. He went 8-6 as a starter but threw 15 touchdowns to 16 interceptions. Osweiler was then traded, along with a sixth-round pick and second-round pick, to the Cleveland Browns for a fourth-round compensatory pick. He was waived before the start of the 2017 season.

Osweiler then returned to Denver. He made four starts and threw for 1,088 yards with five touchdowns and five interceptions. In one game this year with the Dolphins, he has thrown for 35 yards with one touchdown.

Fales is familiar to the Bears. The former sixth-round pick was in Chicago between 2014 and 2015 before a brief stint with the Baltimore Ravens. He then returned to the Bears late in 2016. He joined the Dolphins last season. He has completed 31 of his 48 career passes for 287 yards with one touchdown and one interception.

Tannehill’s status is surprisingly up in the air for Sunday and it could pose a problem for the Dolphins. Regardless of what happens, Chicago will just need to worry about getting pressure on whoever is lined up under center once the game kicks off.
