Ryanair has entrusted a racist incident on one of his robberies to the Essex police, after being criticized for preventing a passenger from causing a racist abuse tirade to a 77-year-old woman.
The airline apparently did not remove the passenger from the flight from Barcelona, but instead moved the woman from her seat.
The man was filmed by a passenger who described the woman as "ugly black bastard" and shouting "do not speak to me in a foreign language" when she spoke to him in English with a Jamaican accent.
David Lawrence, a resident of the United Kingdom, filmed the incident that occurred on Friday on Ryanair flight FR015 between Barcelona and London Stansted, and shared it on social media, which which has prompted many critics about the handling of the incident by the airline.
The video shows the man shouting at the woman to change seats, while her daughter angrily tells her that her mother is disabled, which is why she is moving slowly.
We can hear her shouting: "I do not care if she is disabled or not, if I tell her to go out, she goes out.
The man then decides to ask the staff to move the woman to another seat, adding, "If you do not join another seat, I will push you to another seat."
In the video, the cabin crew seems to have done little at the start to end the man's tirade. A passenger in the row behind him told him to stop the abuse. Then we hear a cabin crew member say to the man, "Do not be so rude, you have to calm down," while the other passengers ask that the man be ejected from the flight.
One hears the woman telling the man that he stinks and that he needs to be washed before asking to be moved so he can sit next to his daughter.
The 53-year-old woman's daughter told The Huffington Post that she was coming home from a vacation designed to lift her mom's spirits a year after her father's death.
The argument started because his mother – a member of the Windrush generation who arrived in the UK in the 1960s – is suffering from arthritis. It took him a while to get away from the path so that the man could reach the window.
"I know that if I behaved this way, or any other black person, the police would have been called and the robbery would have been launched," she said.
"Mom is really upset and very stressed by this situation, in addition to the sorrow she is already experiencing. As for me, I am also annoyed by the fact that the passenger was not taken off the plane and by the way the situation was managed, "she said.
She added that the cabin crew had denied hearing racist slurs and asked her to call customer service on Monday.
The Labor MP for East Hull and the Attorney General of the Shadow, Karl Turner, tweeted: "It should have been removed from the leak and turned over to the police.
"We assume the plane was in the UK. I am fully expecting Ryanair to confirm the situation in fact it was their flight. "
MSP Greenock and Inverclyde, Stuart McMillan, tweeted: "It's really appalling for Ryanair. You will know the identity of the man and the level of training given to your staff. "
Margaret Ferrier, her political colleague of the SNP, said: "I just watched the shocking images of a Ryanair plane, absolutely disgusting. A racist passenger should have been put out of flight before he left. Air hostess unable to react properly. However, congratulations to the passenger with the black t-shirt that intervened – the hero. "
The low-cost airline tweeted Sunday that she had seen the footage and reported the incident to the police in Essex. He added: "As it is now a police case, we can not say more."
A spokeswoman for the Essex Police said: "This incident, of which we were informed this morning, allegedly took place in a plane at the airport of Barcelona. The Essex police are serious about bias crimes and we want all incidents to be reported.
"We are working closely with Ryanair and the Spanish authorities as part of the investigation."
