ST. PETERSBURG, Fla. (AP) – CC Sabathia have protected his teammates, not his wallet.
The 38-year-old lefty won his 246th win and brought the New York Yankees closer to hosting the next week's wild card game, but it may have cost a $ 500,000 bonus.
Sabathia was expelled from the Tampa Bay Rays 12-1 win Thursday in the sixth inning after hitting Jesus Sucre on one leg in retaliation for reliever Andrew Kittredge of Tampa Bay.
At the end of his last regular season start, Sabathia made 55 shots in five innings to increase his total season winnings to 153 – two fewer than a $ 500,000 performance bonus in his contract.
"I guess I do not really take money," Sabathia said. "I just felt it was the right thing to do."
