METAIRIE, La. – New Orleans Saints defensive tackle David Onyemata was fined $ 40,108 for his two pass penalties in the first week.
However, Onyemata, a fourth-round pick in 2016, may request that his fine be reduced as it exceeds 50% of his salary, according to the NFL collective agreement. Players may appeal if a fine for an offense exceeds 25% of their weekly check or if a fine for two offenses exceeds 50%.
Onyemata was one of many players fined $ 20,054 for brutalizing the smuggler during the league's first opening weekend, but he was the only one to receive two fines.
One of his penalties was the result of the new NFL rule that forces players to avoid putting all their weight on the quarterbacks – when Onyemata landed Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Ryan Fitzpatrick immediately after releasing the ball on an incomplete pass in the third quarter.
"I'm working on different things, maybe hitting them and falling on the side or something," Onyemata told reporters earlier this week. "Do not put all my weight on them."
Onyemata's second penalty occurred when he made contact with Fitzpatrick's helmet during a 36-yard touchdown pass. DeSan Jackson in the fourth quarter of Tampa Bay's 48-40 victory.
The NFL did not do much good to defensive end Saints Marcus Davenport for his penalty against Fitzpatrick in the first week.
According to NFL Network, the senior vice president of the NFL to arbitrate Al Riveron said the penalty was an incorrect call by officials.
