The New Orleans Saints are on a roll, and massive Sunday night defensive games have allowed them to exorcize the playoff demons and win a 30-30 road victory over the Minnesota Vikings. This staged the clash of next week against the undefeated Rams.
The fact that the Rams are favorites to win the Super Bowl is a fact accepted since the beginning of the season. The saints can change that with a home win. Rams-Saints could be the best match of the regular season in the NFL this season, and it will go a long way in shaping the image of the NFC playoffs. And after the Saints defeated the Vikings, they look like the type of team that could suffer the first Rams loss, especially with the upcoming game in New Orleans.
The defense of the saints wears the day
The Saints won differently on Sunday. The saints generally rely on their mistakes, which was good but not great on Sunday. Drew Brees was only 120 passing yards. Two huge defensive games have reversed the trend.
The Vikings were up 13-10 late in the first half and leading to scoring. Then Adam Thielen, who was the best receiver of the NFL this season, lost the ball. A long fumble return by New Orleans and a stupid penalty on the Vikings receiver, Laquon Treadwell (who had a decisive fall in fourth position later), for pulling his helmet to the ground, allowing Alvin Kamara to touch floor. It was a huge swing in the game.
The Saints had a 20-13 lead when the defense made an even bigger game. Stefon Diggs seemed to be stopping on a crossover, Kirk Cousins could not adjust quickly enough and sent a pass to the right of cornerback P.J. Williams who sent him 45 yards for a touchdown. A team as powerful as the Saints was not going to give 14 points in advance.
If the defense of New Orleans can create some big games in every match, the attack by the great Brees is champion caliber. This is the formula with which the Saints won their first Super Bowl at the end of the 2009 season.
Saints-Rams is one of the best clashes in the NFL
The saints started the season slowly. The Tampa Bay Buccaneers got them upset in the first week and would probably have lost at home in the second week against the Cleveland Browns. But they ended the Browns game because of Cleveland's kicking problems and they did not look back. The saints have not lost since the first week.
The last time the Saints went to Minnesota, they looked like a team that could win a Super Bowl. They had apparently won in the playoffs and seemed to be going to the NFC championship game, but we all remember the "miracle of Minneapolis".
The saints will feel a lot better when they get home from Minneapolis this time. They played as one of the top NFL teams for a few weeks and their victory at the Vikings was another impressive step. They are a home win against Rams next week after being the driver's seat for the seed in the NFC.
Rams-Saints should be one of the best games of the NFL this season. For the saints, it's a chance to make a big statement.
