SAN DIEGO (AP) – The Mega Millions lottery could see a series of jackpot rotations come to an end as its record $ 1.6 billion draw was announced on Tuesday.
As more and more tickets are sold, it is likely that at least one buyer will choose the six winning numbers. That would put an end to the series of 25 reversals, most recently on Friday night.
According to sales forecasts, 75% of the 302 million possible combinations will be held Tuesday, against 59.1% Friday, said Carole Gentry, spokeswoman for Maryland Lottery and Gaming.
"It's possible that no one wins again, but it's hard to understand," said Gentry.
About 280 million tickets sold in Friday's draw, none of which match winning combinations of 7, 15, 23, 53, 65 and 70 years to win an estimated $ 1 billion. Fifteen tickets corresponded to five issues for second place awards of at least $ 1 million.
The estimated $ 1.6 billion jackpot would be the largest prize in US history. The second biggest prize was Powerball's $ 1.586 billion draw on January 13, 2016.
Russ Lopez, spokesman for the California Lottery, said the tickets were leaving "very, very fast" on Saturday.
Tonya Jimenez, Beaver Market Assistant Director in Fort Collins, Colorado, said the three registers were ready on Saturday, one day after the store sold 220 tickets. Many hopes have never played before.
"We tell them how to play," she says. "They do not know what to do, we explain a lot."
The Mega Millions jackpot has been growing since July, when a group of 11 office workers in California won $ 543 million.
It costs $ 2 to play the game. The odds of winning the jackpot are about one in 302 million, but with so many tickets purchased, the likelihood of a rollover is becoming slimmer.
"I would not be surprised if that happens," said Gentry. "I would be more surprised if it is not touched."
Mega Millions is played in 44 states, Washington, DC and the US Virgin Islands.
