Salmonella and Listeria cause massive boost of 2.5 million pounds of beef and chicken taquitos

More than 2.4 million pounds of ready-to-eat chicken and chicken taquitos recalled, fearful of Salmonella and listeria monocytogenes contamination, Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) United States Department of Agriculture.

The Texas company Ruiz Food Products recalls approximately 2,490,593 pounds of its taquitos products from all over the country, after fearing adulteration by the bacteria.

The subject products manufactured from July 1 to October 10, 2018 are as follows:

  • 4.5 lb. Cardboard boxes containing Be-Go Taquitos brand "Beef and Cheese Taquitos" on a base of 24 counts with case code 86183 printed on the label.
  • 4.5 lb. Cardboard cases containing 24-Digit "Go-Go Taquitos" Buffalo-Baked Chicken Cooked Taquitos, with the 86006 case code printed on the label.
  • 4.5 lb of cardboard boxes containing "Chipotle Chicken Packed in a Beaten Tortilla" from Go-Go Taquitos, 24 digits, with case code 86019 printed on the label.

Products bearing plant numbers 17523A or P-17523A and 45694 or P-45694 and have been distributed nationally.

"FSIS is concerned that some products may end up in consumer refrigerators. Consumers who have purchased these products are urged not to consume them. These products must be discarded or sent back to the place of purchase, "said the department in a statement.

No cases of illness caused by consumption of taquitos have been reported.

Ruiz Food said the problem was detected on October 16 after the company was informed that suppliers had cut the diced onions used in their cheese and meat taquitos, due to concerns over the potential presence. Listeria monocytogenes and Salmonella.

According to the US Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), Salmonella is the leading known cause of bacterial-caused illnesses originating in the United States, causing about 1.2 million illnesses and between 400 and 500 deaths a year.

Symptoms include diarrhea, abdominal cramps and fever within 12 to 72 hours of consuming the contaminated product. Most people can recover from Salmonella treatment without treatment. However, in some cases, the diarrhea can be so severe that the patient has to be hospitalized.

Listeriosis can cause fever, muscle aches, headache, stiff neck, diarrhea or other gastrointestinal diseases. The symptoms are more serious in pregnant women who may have a miscarriage, stillbirth, or risk transmitting a potentially fatal infection to the newborn.

Exposure can also be fatal for the elderly or those whose immune system is weakened. An infection can be treated with antibiotics.
