Say goodbye to these mouse-shaped ice cream bars as strangely delicious shovels have finally arrived at Disneyland. Portland-based chain Salt and straw This morning, he opened his sixteenth store in the Downtown Disney neighborhood of Anaheim, offering Dole Whip enthusiasts, carved wood interiors and tasty flavors.
Recognized for its unexpected combinations of flavors such as Black Olive Brittle & Cheat and Strawberry and Black Pepper Balsamic Honey, Disneyland's new location will also be the only quality store to feature. Pots of Gold & Rainbows, a sweet milk soaked in cereals and a mashed marshmallow Lucky Charms.
The Anaheim store will serve a total of twelve of the classic flavors of the company, but there is more: bugs covered with candy. The three Halloween-themed spoons of Salt & Straw will debut at the store, including Creepy Crawly Critters, a brittle cocoa matcha ice cream mealworms and crickets covered with dark chocolate, giving the Oogie Boogie corners of the block a realistic turn. (Take care of more protein in your more pedestrian spoons?) Go for "Crittles", the fragile sweet worm, like a delicious Nightmare Before Christmas-y trim.)
Like other Salt & Straw locations on the West Coast, the new Downtown Disney scoop store was also designed by Andee Hess of Osmose Design, the firm behind Portland's Q Restaurant and the Small Tea in Miami. The location, with its carved light fixtures, its wooden door handles and its rustic style evoking the red and white striped pattern of the glaciers, is marked by a 14 foot carved wooden ice cream totem – an unexpected craft touch, considering the Fantasyland of the Disney theme park setting.
Located in downtown Disney, the area's restaurants and shopping, just beyond the entrance to Disneyland and Disney California Adventure, the new facility serving desserts will also sell small products on the market ( Marshall's Honey's Farm, Theo's Chocolate) and will offer a free-to-go pint freezer for hotel room indulgences from 10am to midnight, daily. Do not worry about the entrance, the mall-like open-air area is open to the public, no tickets are needed.
Salt & Straw is only the first of three open banners in downtown Disney. Black Tap Craft Burgers & Beer, as well as Ballast Point, which will include Disney's first brewery, are expected to open in the coming months.
