DETROIT – Sam Darnold will be deprived of one of his main targets during his NFL debut on Monday night at Ford Field.

Jermaine Kearse, who played all 16 games of the Jets last season, was ruled out of the opening game of the season by an injury to the abdomen.

Kearse is one of three starters who will miss the game. Security Marcus Maye (foot) and linebacker Josh Martin (concussion) are also on the list of inactive.

Martin and Maye are both essential to the defense of the Jets. Martin, also a special team, has not coached since he suffered a concussion in the third preseason game. Maye, who played all 16 games in 2017, has a foot injury that has nothing to do with the ankle surgery he had in January (according to the Jets).

But Kearse would probably have been the most important for the Jets tonight. He is the most experienced receiver of the team and has developed good relations with Darnold – both are even sitting next to each other in the locker room – and would have eased the burden of the first start from Darnold.

Some Jets could be more involved in Kearse's absence: Terrelle Pryor, Quincy Enunwa and Charone Peake.

In addition, rookie linebacker Frankie Luvu could save time in his first NFL game with the Jets in the second round. Jordan Jenkins, Brandon Copeland, Jeremiah Attaochu and Luvu are the only active external linebackers on the list for tonight's game.

Copeland will probably start at Josh Martin's. Doug Middleton will probably replace Maye safely.

For the Lions: Ameer Abdullah, the attacking midfielder, was a healthy scratch.
