Quarterback Sam Darnold of the New York Jets would be supposed to sit on the bench after all, but that's not for all the reasons people speculated about this week.

Manish Mehta of the New York Daily News reported Darnold has a "significant" foot sprain and will not play Sunday against the Buffalo Bills. Mehta added that the team was not optimistic Darnold will be ready for the team's game against the Patriots after the end of his 11th week. Josh McCown will probably start, if Darnold sits down. It may not be the worst idea to let the rookie quarter empty his head.
Sam Darnold's injury was not known Sunday
It will be interesting to see when Darnold got hurt. This could explain some of his difficulties last week against the Dolphins. During teleconferences with reporters Monday, Jets coach Todd Bowles said he was unaware of any injuries inflicted on Darnold. Darnold said that he felt "good".
Darnold leads the NFL with 14 steals and has had extreme highs and lows. After launching four interceptions during a defeat in Miami, questions arose as to whether he would be on the bench. Jets coach Todd Bowles said he did not envision that.
There does not seem to be a choice this week. Darnold will probably be watching McCown from the sidelines, perhaps for several games. This could end up being for the better.
