Samantha Mathis was with her boyfriend, When he died on October 31, 1993, River Phoenix was the victim of a drug overdose that occurred outside the famous Los Angeles Viper Club.
Mathis breaks his silence about the tragic death of 25 years ago.
"I knew something was wrong that night, something I did not understand," said actress "American Psycho" in an interview with the British Guardian. "I did not see anyone taking drugs, but he feels uncomfortable, I was above my head."
Mathis said that she and Phoenix were with her siblings Leaf (now known as Joaquin) and Rain, and that they were only stopping at the disco, so in part owned by Johnny Depp. But the Phoenix musician reversed the plans.
He said, "Oh, there are people playing music tonight in the club who want me to play with them – okay, okay? "Remember Mathis Forty-five minutes later, he was dead."

Mathis never spoke of death, while she and Phoenix were barely 23 years old. "Except for my therapist," she said in the interview. But the actress saw for the first time the latest Phoenix film completed before she died, in which she co-starred in "The Thing Called Love".
It was like a sign that "the universe wanted me to talk about it".
Mathis said that she came out of the Viper Room's bathroom and that she saw what she thought was Phoenix fighting with another man. Both of them were pushed out of the side door of the club by a bouncer. After that, she saw Phoenix fall on the sidewalk in convulsions.
"What did you do? What are you doing?" Mathis said that she had shouted at the other man, who had replied, "Leave him alone, you are spoiling him."
Phoenix had died from an overdose of cocaine and heroin before ambulance arrived.
Mathis reminded the actor as being "sensitive and obsessive. He felt things on his heart very deeply. "
"I'm looking at a picture of him now, oh wow …," said Mathis in the telephone interview. "I think if River was still here, I think he would act, lead, save the environment, live and go out. Oh that then, that would not be nice?
