The Norwegian Bliss, a 4,500-passenger cruise ship destined for the Mexican Riviera, was diverted Wednesday in San Diego because of a hurricane that landed the night before on the west coast of Mexico.
The Norwegian Cruise Line vessel is the largest cruise ever docked in San Diego, which is more accustomed to accommodating more medium-sized ships.
The largest ships that usually call at San Diego come from Princess Cruises – the Grand Princess, the Star Princess and the Ruby Princess – all of which are class-class ships that can accommodate about 3,000 passengers, depending on the port of San Diego .
The original route for the Bliss, which left Saturday in Los Angeles, included stops in Puerto Vallarta, Mazatlan and Cabo San Lucas. According to a revised route, the ship first stopped in San Francisco on Monday and then in San Diego on Wednesday. It was planned to leave at 18h. for Ensenada where he will arrive on Thursday morning. He is supposed to return to Los Angeles on Saturday.
The hurricane that forced the diversion was later downgraded to a tropical storm.
"Our onboard team is working to ensure the best possible vacation experience given these weather-related changes," said the cruise company in a statement released Wednesday. "We will continue to closely monitor storms and provide additional updates as soon as they are available. We apologize for any inconvenience or disappointment that these weather related changes may cause. "
