SAN DIEGO – A man opened fire on police and firefighters in a San Diego condominium, injuring two officers and throwing bullets into nearby units before being found dead, authorities said Sunday.
Police Chief David Nisleit said the two men needed to recover, one in serious condition and the other with less serious injuries, reported the Union – Tribune 's San Diego.
"It's the worst call possible," Nellieit told reporters. "When you receive this call, your stomach is just flowing, and you are hoping that no one will die."
He did not disclose the names of the wounded officers, claiming that one of them had three years of experience in the force and that the other was 18.
Three officers responded to a report of a violent disturbance and knocked on the door. They had no answer but felt what they thought was smoke and called the fire department, police said.
They forced the door, and "they were greeted by gunshots," Nisleit said.
Two officers fired in a shootout that sent bullets into nearby condos. The authorities evacuated the people from the complex and sent a robot to check the suspect, whose name was not disclosed.
The police found him dead, but he was not clear whether he died in the shooting or committed suicide. Nisleit said agents had already been called to the condo, but he did not specify.
Matthew Bezrouch, who lives a few doors down, told the newspaper that he had heard at least 20 rounds after the agents had attempted to enter the condo.
"It was fast," Bezrouch said. They shouted: Two officers downstairs, bleeding!
He said he heard a last shot after the arrival of other police officers.
Megan Ashdown, 23, and her boyfriend, William Blood, 24, said they heard 15 or more hits while watching TV.
"We went to bed, we closed the door and turned off the lights," Ashdown said. "We were too scared to look out the window."
The police then released the couple.
