SAN DIEGO, California – Experts from the San Diego Zoo successfully equipped a diabetes koala with a glucose monitor designed for humans.
The San Diego Tribune reported that zoo experts worked with Scripps Health and the Dexcom glucose monitoring company to monitor Queensland's Quincy koala type 1 diabetes. According to KFMB, it's not clear how Quincy had this disease, but this has rarely been documented in koalas.

Dexcom's G6 Continuous Glucose Monitoring System was donated by the company. The system means that the marsupial will no longer have to prick its ears several times a day to test its glucose levels.
"Very few koalas have been diagnosed and treated for diabetes," said Cora Singleton, DVM, Senior Veterinarian, San Diego Zoo Veterinary Services, in a statement. "Quincy currently requires insulin injections, which are based on his blood sugar levels.With a continuous glucose monitor, we may be able to monitor Quincy glucose levels throughout the day without We hope that this technology will work as well in koalas as in people, which will allow us to optimize its treatment by insulin while promoting its well-being during its illness. "
According to a Scripps Health press release, the procedure to place the monitor on Quincy has gone well.
