The squeaky sound you hear is the brakes pumped on the San Francisco 49ers flying train. The 49ers, a fashionable choice for a busy season, struggled in the first week. The 49ers (0-1) came in the first week after winning five straight games behind quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo to close the 2017 season. More than a few observers chose them to win a playoff spot in 2018. However, they were brought back to Earth by the strong Minnesota Vikings defense in their 24-16 loss. Garoppolo threw three interceptions in the match and failed to complete at least 50% of his passes.
The 49ers will look for a match against the Lions after winning just 90 yards against 26 Vikings. The defense played very well, conceding only 17 points – the Vikings scored on a touchdown in point 6 – and the Vikings scored five points on their first six possessions in the second half.
The Lions (0-1) made a great start in their match against the New York Jets in the first week. Cornerback Quandre Diggs scored on a choice of 6 in the first 31-point scrum and the four interceptions of quarterback Matthew Stafford resulted in a 48-17 home defeat.
Stafford suffered knee hyperextension after tackle Taylor Decker rolled over his leg and was sandwiched to another tack that Stafford said knocked out the wind. Stafford should begin, extending his series of 112 consecutive starts.
