Sandra Parks, who wrote an essay on gun violence, is murdered by a stray bullet

Two years after receiving an award for her essay, bullets broke the window of Sandra's room as she watched television Monday night. The stray bullet shot from outside her home hit the 13-year-old girl, killing her, CNN affiliate WISN said.

"She took him as a soldier," said his sister, Tatiana Ingram, to the branch. "She just walked into the room and said:" Mom, I'm hurt … "The bullet was not even for her."

Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett described the "madness" of gun violence in the city and across the country.

"Sandra Parks … came into her room, she never came out alive," Barrett said at a press conference. "Tragically, his death was caused by someone who just decided to shoot bullets in his house and died."

"Our first truth is that we need to start worrying about each other," she wrote. "We must empathize and try to put ourselves in each others' shoes … We will win when we love and love the people around us, and then we become our guardian of the brothers."

Dozens of people gathered for a vigil in front of Sandra's house on Tuesday night. They waved a plaque with his essay as they pondered his calls against violence.

His mother, Bernice Parks, said that her daughter was constantly voiced against the violence. "My baby was not violent, my baby did not like violence," she said.

"All you hear is someone who is dying or someone who gets shot at and people do not just think about father, son, the granddaughter or the grandson who just killed, "she said.
