Saudi Sisters May Suicide

New York City police say that two Saudi sisters whose bodies were washed away by the Hudson River in Manhattan have probably committed suicide.

Dermot Shea, detective chief of the New York City Police Department, said Tala Farea, 16, and Rotana Farea, 23, would have preferred suicide to returning to Saudi Arabia.

Shea said the young women were "probably living in the water".

Their bodies were found stuck together, tied to the waist and ankles, according to the police.

Based on video evidence, eyewitness testimony and credit card purchases for food, hotel and transportation, police said she determined there was probably no foul play involved in the death of the sisters.

The young women, who had lived in the United States for about three years, may have been physically abused and may have asked for asylum.

Their family in the state of Virginia saw them for the last time in 2017.
