At least 25 people were killed when a high-speed bus fell into a canal in southern India, an official said. Many of the victims would be schoolchildren.

Dr. G Parameshwara, deputy chief minister of Karnataka, said that the accident occurred Saturday in Mandya district, while the driver had lost control of the vehicle at high speed.

Parameshwara said that a rescue operation was underway, with the police rushing the divers on the spot. The region lies 105 km southwest of Bengaluru, capital of Karnataka State.

According to the Press Trust of India, many of the victims are children returning from school.

Every year, about 150,000 people die on Indian roads, often due to careless driving, poorly maintained roads and overcrowded passenger vehicles.
