HONOLULU – Scientists have discovered two tiny octopus floating in a plastic bin that they were cleaning by monitoring the coral reefs off the coast of Kona.
Sallie Beavers, marine ecologist, of Kaloko-Honokohau National Historic Park, said Wednesday that octopuses were about the size of a green pea.
She thinks it was probably octopus day or night, two species that are commonly found off Hawaii. They can reach 12 pounds at adulthood, with an arm span of 3 feet.
The scientists found them months ago, but the US Department of the Interior has highlighted them this week by posting a photo of it on social media.
Octopus babies hide under logs and other floating debris until they are a few months old. Beavers say that one of them has injected a tiny bit of ink when they released it into the ocean.
