After a surprise meteorite struck the Earth at 42,000 km / h and blew up on a Russian city in February, breaking windows and causing minor injuries, scientists studying the consequences claim that space rocks threaten our planet. Meteor Crater is one of the youngest and best preserved impact craters on Earth. The crater was formed about 50,000 years ago when a meteorite of 30 meters wide, rich in iron and weighing 100,000 tons, hit the desert of Arizona at an estimated speed at 20 kilometers per second. The resulting explosion exceeded the combined strength of current nuclear arsenals and created a crater 1.00 kilometers wide and 200 meters deep. Meteor Crater is a simple crater since there is no central peak or terraces. The crater was formed in stratified sedimentary rocks dating back to the Paleozoic, some of which are on display in the nearby Grand Canyon. These rocks were raised and, in some cases, overturned at the raised edge of the crater. Debris sliding and subsequent erosion partially filled the bottom of the crater with minor amounts of rim material and sediment.
The history of the heavily cratered Moon indicates that the Earth has also experienced many impact events at the beginning of its history. The erosion and tectonic processes of the plates have combined to erase almost all the terrestrial craters. To date, only about 150 impact craters have been identified on Earth, and most of them are severely eroded or buried by subsequent rock units. The origin of this classic and simple meteorite impact crater has long been the subject of controversy.
The discovery of fragments of the Diablo Canyon meteorite, including fragments in the gap deposits that partially fill the structure, and a range of shock metamorphic features in the target sandstone have proved its origin. Target rocks include Paleozoic carbonates and sandstones; these rocks were spilled just outside the rim during ejection. The hummocky deposits just beyond the rim are remnants of the ejecta cover.
