A photograph captured by NASA's Opportunity robot was turned into a 2-minute musical score by British scientists.
With the help of the 5,000th photo of a sunrise on Opportunity, scientists from Anglia Ruskin University and Exeter University attributed the height and the melody at every pixel of the image. The technique is known as data sonification.
The Anglia Ruskin University research group, Domenico Vicinanza, said the process used was "a very flexible technique for exploring science" and that it could be used to study the surfaces and atmospheres of animals. planets, as well as to detect volcanic eruptions.
According to a press release, the dark background of the photo would produce soft and slow harmonies, while the brighter areas would produce higher pitched sounds.
The whole room looks like many could describe a sunrise: quiet, calm and simply beautiful.
Vicinanza and Genevieve Williams, of Exeter University, present the play titled "Mars Soundscapes" at the SC18 Supercomputing Conference in Dallas, Texas.
