San Diego State beats Arizona State on targeting rule
San Diego State has just unveiled one of the rarest achievements of college football: winning through the rule of targeting. Well … somehow. The Aztecs defeated Arizona State 28-21 after a fall from ASU Hail Mary at the end of the match. However, a forward play, a deep pass on Frank Darby's fourth and tenth place, was captured in the 5-yard line of SDSU. However, officials examined whether the Aztecs were committed to targeting and, in the process, ruled the pass incomplete. As such, Arizona State was forced to try a 35-yard pass instead of a 5-yard pass. In this case, the targeting did not lead directly to a victory of the Aztecs, but it strongly contributed to the victory.
Myles Gaskin heads Washington on Utah
No. 10 Washington played in Utah in a late-night showdown at Rice-Eccles Stadium, and was busy doing business against the Utes, hard-core. Running back Myles Gaskin had 143 yards passing and one touchdown, quarterback Jake Browning was 14 of 24 and Aaron Fuller had six catches for 108 yards for the Huskies. Greg Gaines and Washington's defense have been outstanding, holding the Utes just 261 yards into the night. It was a critical victory for the crew of coach Chris Petersen, who might need to run after losing to Auburn.
Alabama is gone against Ole Miss
At some point, we might consider passing a rule that Alabama can not have an impressive quarterback. Of course, Miss Ole has a bad defense, but Alabama also has Tua Tagovailoa, and when you put those two things together, things like that happen.
Tua finished with 191 yards and two touchdowns, Jalen Hurts made two touchdowns and Alabama crushed Ole Miss 62-7. He was 49-7 at half-time, but the tide was pitiful. He probably could have scored 100s he wanted it.
Northwest blows ahead of Akron
Just in case the Big Ten would not have had a bad enough day, Northwestern managed to take a 21-3 lead at halftime over Akron. The Zips exploded in the second half and retained their 39-34 win against the Wildcats at Evanston on Saturday night. It was Akron's first win against a Big Ten team since 1894. Yes, more than 124 years old.
Mizzou beats Purdue with winning FG over time
Missouri and Purdue have played one of the most entertaining games of the day that most people have probably skipped. Drew Lock had 375 yards and 3 touchdowns while David Blough of Purdue set a record with 572 passing yards and 3 touchdowns. In the end, it was all played on Missouri kicker Tucker McCann's leg, who split the 25-yard amounts at the end of the allotted time to give the Tigers the win.
Bobby Petrino just avoids the loss to his former team
Last week, western Kentucky lost to Maine 31-28. This week, Western Kentucky beat Louisville and former coach Bobby Petrino 14-3 at halftime. Petrino did not spend much time in Western Kentucky, taking only a year with the Hilltoppers before returning to Louisville for his second stint with the Cardinals.
Alan Bowman leads Texas Tech to Houston
The quarterbacks of Texas Tech could change, but the results of the box are still the same. Alan Bowman, Tech's new QB, sent 605 yards and five touchdowns to lead the Raiders to a 63-49 win over Houston. It was a defensive fight for ages. Bowman beat a former Texas Tech QB record in the process.
The non-conference nightmare of Arkansas continues
Last week, the Razorbacks took an 18-point lead over Colorado State and lost 34-27. Well, the Hogs will not make the difference this week because they did not have one. North Texas wins at the Hogs, leading 37-10 in the fourth quarter.
Our Lady is holding Vanderbilt
Notre Dame gets used to winning tight games early in the season. They started the year with a seven-point win over Michigan, beat Ball State by eight last week and hung on to beat Vanderbilt 22-17 on Saturday. Vanderbilt will probably look at this piece and wonder what could have been.
Troy gets another victory from Power Five
Last season, Troy shocked the world by going to Baton Rouge and defeating LSU. This year, the Trojans added the Nebraska Cornhuskers to their Power Five conquest list. Troy beat Nebraska 24-19 on Saturday thanks to turnovers and special teams. Nebraska has flipped the ball more than three times, including an interception in his last possession of the game after recovering the ball just five points. Troy had a 17-0 lead at halftime and spent the second half hanging on that lead with everything he had – and that paid off. Neal Brown will be a hot commodity on the coaching market this winter.
The top corner of Boise State is released against Oklahoma State
Boise State will face Oklahoma State in Stillwater without one of his best defenders. Corner half Tyler Horton is with undisclosed injury He supported against UConn in Week 2. Horton led the Broncos with 11 separate passes and was an All-Mountain West selection.
Kansas is a football school now
Last week, Kansas ended a run of 46 defeats by beating Central Michigan. This week, the Jayhawks beat Rutgers home. Kansas destroyed the Scarlet Knights 55-14, largely thanks to two pick-six of his defense. The basketball season may have to wait a little longer for Lawrence.
Temple honors Jordan McNair for the Maryland match
This will probably – for good reason – be a recurring theme throughout the season. This morning, Temple announced on its Twitter account that it would carry a sticker No. 79 in honor of Maryland offensive lineman Jordan McNair, who died this summer during an intense training session. Maryland has already done that, but it is good to see other programs participate.
