SCOTTSDALE, Arizona (KSAZ) – While the valley expects to suffer the shock of tropical storm Rosa later on Monday night and Tuesday, Scottsdale residents are bracing for flash floods.
The city of Scottsdale has three self-service sandbag stations, where sand, bags and shovels are provided.
"Free sand, I pick up the sandbags and take them away," said Dana Kalos. She said that although she was not worried that Tropical Storm Rosa would hit her house, she is still at District 1 Police Headquarters on McKellips Road, shoveling sand.
"You never know how bad it is going to rain with this type of storm, so I just want to be prepared," said Kalos.
Kalos said that it was better to prevent than cure, and it's not the only one.
"The demand seems to be stronger this time.I think it's because of Hurricane Rosa, now Tropical Storm Rosa, which is popping up from the gulf," said Brent Olson, Scottsdale Emergency Manager. . He added that the city had had to fill several sandbag stations because many people were using them. He also plans to put bags in front of his house later Monday.
"Just bend them, they do not have to be tied," said Olson. "And you can flatten them once you've laid them down."
The biggest mistake people make is filling the sandbags too much.
"The bottom line is to fill in about two-thirds," said Olson.
"I think it's an excellent service that the city provides to the citizens," said ___.
"The news is out and I think more people are being prepared, which is what I like to see as an emergency manager," Olson said.
The city has two other free sandbag stations, located near the northern corporation's construction site and the city's solid waste transfer center.
Officials point out that if you have ever had flood problems, get ready in advance. There is a limit of 10 sandbags per family, and they are most effective when they are placed in front of entry points, such as doors and garages.
