D.J. Jeffries, a five – star small striker and No. 21 hope of the 100th ESPN, is engaged today in Memphis for Alabama, Ole Miss and the state of Mississippi. This one-time commitment to Kentucky reopened its recruitment on July 30th.
Why did he commit: Jeffries and Memphis coach Penny Hardaway have a long-standing relationship. Jeffries plays for Team Penny on the summer circuit and this experience made the difference.
"I trust Penny and his staff, I have very good relationships with Penny, he has coached me and helped me in the past," Jeffries said. ESPN. "My goal is to play in the NBA, and I believe it can help me get there."
What he brings: Jeffries is one of the best in the class to finish a quick break. He is comfortable and very efficient in the transition game, filling the hallways and running up to the edge. In the half-court, Jeffries displays excellent versatility in terms of bullets and score. His sweater pull-up is powerful inside the bow, but his long-distance sweater needs a lot more polishing, though he's able to. With his skills in terms of frame and ball, he can be a player who moves to different places of the ground depending on the clash. If Jeffries wants to be effective in Memphis, it will be important to reduce his turnarounds while maintaining his efforts.
How it fits: Penny Hardaway is the first head coach at university basketball. He was very successful as a high school student and field coach. His style of play insists on pushing the strong ball in transition. As a player of all time, he will seek to incorporate some quick hitters into his system. It will allow Jeffries to rebound and push the ball and exploit his size and skills as a benefit against bad clashes. The Tigers lose four elders, so there is plenty of space for a big class.
How does the class look: At No. 21, Jeffries, of Olive Branch, Mississippi – just minutes from Memphis – brings credibility to recruitment. The Tigers also have powerful forward Malcolm Dandridge on board. Memphis is now number one, James Wiseman, who is making his official visit this weekend, alongside numbers 23, Trenton Watford and 40, Boogie Ellis, which have priority while Hardaway seeks to add from other rooms.
Now on board, Jeffries is already recruiting Wiseman. "Come and join us," he says. "We want you and the city of Memphis wants you."
