With two Pro-Bowl linebackers in this week's injury report, the Seahawks added depth to this group of positions on Friday, signing former Philadelphia Eagles star Mychal Kendricks. Linebacker Jermaine Grace was exonerated or injured to make room on the roster of 53 players.
Kendricks, 27, was a 2012 second-round pick against California, where he earned the title of Pac-12 defensive player of the year. He was selected a choice before the Seahawks took Bobby Wagner, a possible All-Pro three times. Kendricks, who is 5-foot-11, 240-pound, has started 74 regular-season games in the past six seasons with the Eagles, as well as Philadelphia's three post-season games last season. Kendricks had a starting experience both as a linebacker and a lineman in a 4-3 defense, and he was also a linebacker when the Eagles defended Chip Kelly 3-4.
The Seahawks played without relaunching left-linebacker KJ Wright in his first game, while the former Pro-Bowler is recovering from an arthroscopic knee surgery that could hold him out this week . Wagner was a new addition to the injury report this week, apart from Thursday's tries with a groin injury.
The Eagles released Kendricks in May, and he then signed with the Cleveland Browns. Kendricks was released by Cleveland last month.
Grace, who was eliminated by the Seahawks before the start of the season, played six times with special teams in Sunday's first game in Denver.
The Seahawks also made a change in the test team, signing linebacker Tre'Von Johnson and releasing running back Lavon Coleman. Johnson, 23, was retired from Weber State in 2017 and spent last season on the Dallas training team before being added to the 53-man roster of week 17. Coleman, who played at the University of Washington earlier this month.
