A kayaker relaxing in the waters surrounding the island of New Zealand has caught a strange and unexpected encounter with the local marine life.
Kyle Mulinder was paddling off Kaikōura when a seal came out of the water and hit him with a big octopus.
Mr. Mulinder and his friends had observed a group of seals under the surface and had seen one of the largest males struggling with an octopus.
The slippery mammal arose with the eight-member mollusk trapped in her jaws and whipped her towards the unsuspecting kayaker.
"I was like" Mate, what just happened? "," Mulinder told the Seven News network in Australia. "It was weird because it happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face."
"I'm not sure who was the most surprised – the seal, the octopus or me," he added.

Mr. Mulinder, who works for GoPro, had a camera attached to his watercraft. He and his friend Taiyo Masuda – who was also filming – both shared the moment on Instagram.
"We immediately started laughing, we were certainly surprised," Masuda told CNN. "We are all adventurers, but we do not meet them every day. Such a cruel moment made us laugh so much all day. What a day to remember.
The main diet of seals is fish, but we know that they eat larger creatures such as squid and octopus.
