A New Zealand kayaker was surprised by the presence of a malicious seal while he was out at sea.
Remarkable images of GoPro captured off Kaikoura on the island of New Zealand show that Kyle Mulinder was hit in the face by an octopus after a seal catapulted him.
"We were just sitting in the middle of the ocean and this huge male seal appeared with an octopus and it was beating it for centuries," Mulinder told Yahoo. He says the fight disappeared under the water before the couple reappeared at his side. The video then shows the seal that pierced the surface of the water, the octopus in the mouth, before hitting his neck and wrapping the live octopus around Mulinder's face. "He beat him in battle and my face was found in the wrong place at the wrong time," he recalls.
A stunned mulinder can be seen clinking of impact before the two animals disappear into the water.
"I was like 'Mate, what has just happened? 'It was weird because it had happened so fast but I could feel all the hard parts of the octopus on my face like' dum dum dum ', "he says.
At the end of the clip, one can hear Mulinder let out a provocative roar amid a loud response from his peers. The group, creators of content for GoPro, was kayaking to test the company's latest model Hero7 in the scenic area when they captured the amazing moment.
"It's famous for its wildlife – albatrosses and seals and things like that … but it's not done every day!
Mulinder revealed that despite the apparent dominance of the seal in scrap, the octopus has emerged victorious. He said that the octopus clung to the end of his kayak after the fight and that Mulinder only managed to free him with the help of another kayaker.
