Sean Manaea, who was the best starting pitcher for Oakland Athletics, will have arthroscopic surgery on his left shoulder and is finished for the season, the team said on Tuesday.
Manager Bob Melvin said Manaea could miss most, if not all, of the 2019 season, but the A will not know it before the surgery.
Manaea, who was 12-9 with a career-best 3.59 and 108 out of 27 starts this season, will visit orthopedic surgeon Neal ElAttrache in Los Angeles on September 19th.
"The details we'll talk about more after surgery, so we'll know exactly what has been repaired," Melvin said before a match in Baltimore. "Unfortunately, it's another expectation that we'll have to wait a year for, you feel really and really more for him, he was the only one to stay long in the rotation."
Manaea, 26, began strengthening her exercises on September 3, but the team felt it was better to have surgery at this stage.
"He was this guy at every series, when the teams played us, they are looking to see if Manaea is throwing in the series," said Melvin. "That's what your guy wants to say to you." Once again, I feel worse for him, we'll find a way out. "
When he was placed on the list of disabled people on Aug. 26 for rotator cuff tendinitis, Manaea finished second in the AHL, ninth inning and sixth in nine innings (1.79) .
He pitched a non-hitter in April against Boston.
The A are three games behind the Houston Astros in the AL West race and are currently second in the standings with a 7½-game lead.
Oakland has been plagued by end-of-season injuries to pitchers. Daniel Gossett, Kendall Graveman, Jharel Cotton and A.J. Puk underwent Operation Tommy John this year.
"I think his psychology, based on the fact that we had a lot this year, is almost as if we were insensitive," Melvin said. "It started in the spring with two guys."
"Everyone feels for [Manaea] and then you go right past and keep trying to play the way we have. And he came out a little too. It's not as if it was a sudden thing that happened on the last day or two, "he said.
