Four Navy divers entered the MV Nyerere early Saturday after hearing sounds suggesting signs of life.

Their initial search did not locate the survivors, while the bodies continued to float to the surface around the ship.

The TBC public channel said the death toll was 161, citing John Mongella, commissioner of the Mwanza region where the disaster occurred.

The ferry sank Thursday night just meters from the Ukerewe wharf, the largest island on the lake. According to first estimates, there were more than 300 people on board.

On Friday, President John Magufuli ordered the arrest of those responsible for the sinking.
