Sears in Saratoga Springs to close in February
Another day, another store closure.
The Sears department store at Wilton Shopping Center in Saratoga Springs is part of another wave of closings announced by Sears Holdings, the parent company in bankruptcy of Sears and Kmart retailers.
The company said Thursday that 29 Sears stores and 11 Kmart stores across the country will close in February 2019.
A kmart in Huntington and a Sears in Watertown are the other sites in New York that should close.
It was previously announced that the Sears at Aviation Mall in Queensbury is also scheduled to close this fall.
Liquidation sales at the 40 Kmart and Sears sites "are expected to begin late next week," the company said.
Sears Holdings operated approximately 1,000 stores as recently as February, but closed underperforming stores. When the company filed for bankruptcy last month, it said it had only 400 stores that could generate profits. Now he is losing more dead weight.
In its bankruptcy filing, Sears named 142 of its underperforming stores that would close over the next few months. This was in addition to 46 stories already waiting for closure.
The company will have fewer than 500 Sears and Kmart stores left open after additional closures.
