Seasonal allergies are intensifying in Texas

The American Foundation for Allergy and Asthma ranks San Antonio among the 5 most difficult places to live with seasonal allergies.

Allergies are chronic conditions that cause the immune system to react to an external substance. Up to 20% of the population is struggling with allergies throughout the year.

Sneezing, coughing and watery, tearing eyes are familiar symptoms caused by allergens in the air, which peak at different times of the year, depending on the spore.

Common outdoor allergens include pollen and molds. Oak pollen, mountain cedar and ragweed are commonly found in central and southern Texas.

Pet dander, biting insects, mites, latex and certain foods or medications can also cause allergic reactions.

These bodily reactions often depend on the person, ranging from a stuffy nose, a cough or a rash to more serious reactions such as swelling of the mouth and throat.

Anaphylaxis – a serious allergic reaction that develops rapidly – can affect several body systems at the same time and can be fatal if it is severe enough.

How do you know what you are allergic to? Are antihistamines enough to help your immune system cope with allergies?

How do environmental factors affect the prevalence of allergies in Texas? What other treatments, remedies and habits can help you cope?
