A second case of measles was confirmed in Lowell, and public health officials warned Saturday that local residents may have been exposed to the contagious disease in three public places.
The case was diagnosed Thursday at the Lowell Community Health Center, where the first case had been diagnosed a week earlier, according to a statement from the state's Department of Public Health.
"There is no known link between the two cases," said Dr. Catherine Brown, state epidemiologist in her release.
Officials are now trying to identify people who may have been exposed to the disease.
The second measles patient visited a T.J. Maxx in Chelmsford on Nov. 11 and a Walmart Supercenter in Tewksbury and the health center on Nov. 15, the statement said.
On those days, the people who were at T.J. Maxx from 3pm to 7pm, Walmart from 5pm to 8pm and the health center from 4pm to 9pm. could be at risk of exposure, the statement said.
The health center reaches out to patients who may have been exposed to it and organizes schedules to administer the vaccines. according to the statement.
Officials advise anyone in these areas to contact their doctor to find out if they have ever received a measles vaccine. "Being vaccinated within 3 to 5 days of exposure can reduce the risk of getting measles," said Brown.
