VOORHEES, N.J. – Patients at a second New Jersey pediatric facility were found to have a respiratory virus, but authorities say it is a different strain than nine deaths.
The state health department has announced the presence of four confirmed cases of adenovirus among pediatric patients at the Voorhees Pediatric Center. Preliminary tests, however, excluded Type 7, the strain associated with nine deaths at the Wanaque Nursing and Rehabilitation Center.
New Jersey health officials are sending infection control teams to four long-term pediatric centers and a hospital to help them learn about the viral and bacterial epidemics that have killed 10 people.
One of the deaths in Wanaque center was a young adult. A premature baby died of a bacterial infection at Newark Hospital this month.
Voorhees is in Camden County, near Philadelphia.
