CBS News correspondent Errol Barnett on Tuesday night posted a video showing Secret Service agents blocking him when he tried to ask White House advisor Jared Kushner a question about the disappearance of the Washington Post reporter Jamal Khashoggi. The incident occurred when Barnett saw Ivanka Trump and Kushner on her flight from Washington to New York.
In the video, we can see Barnett trying to ask Kushner a question, but before he could finish, Secret Service agents blocked his phone and one of the agents said, "I do not care who you are. There is a time and a place.
A spokesman for the secret service responded to the video saying: "The secret service is aware of the video posted today on Twitter by @errolbarnett. The circumstances surrounding the incident are being reviewed. While awaiting additional facts, details and all circumstances surrounding the incident, appropriate action will be taken if necessary. No further comments will be made until the incident can be fully investigated. "
Kushner, son-in-law of President Donald Trump, played a major role in the White House's reaction to the journalist's disappearance. Kushner would have close relations with Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman, the heir to the Saudi throne. As part of the White House's efforts to bring Saudi Arabia into an investigation into Khashoggi's case, the two men had a direct phone conversation in recent days.
Khashoggi, a US permanent resident and Washington Post contributor, was reported missing on October 2 after a visit to the Saudi Arabian consulate in Turkey to complete the necessary documents to marry his Turkish bride.
The Turkish government claimed that Saudi Arabia sent a 15-member team to kill Khashoggi while he was inside the consulate. He also reportedly had audio and video recordings proving that Khashoggi had been killed at the consulate.
Officials from the United States and Turkey told the Washington Post that the recording shows a Saudi security team holding Khashoggi inside the consulate. They also claimed that the team then killed him and dismembered his body.
"The voice recording of the embassy describes what happened to Jamal after his entry. You can hear his voice and that of men who speak Arabic. You can hear how he was interrogated, tortured and then murdered, "a postman with the recordings told the Post.
According to reports, Khashoggi was killed a few minutes after his arrival at the consulate and not after interrogation. He was dragged from the Consul General's office to the office of his nearby office where Salah Muhammad al-Tubaigy, an autopsy expert, dismembered his body. Tubaigy reportedly listened to music while dismembering and would have advised other people in the same room to do the same, a Turkish source from the Middle East Eye news site.
Saudi initially denied playing a role in the disappearance. However, much information suggests that he was about to say that his death was the result of an interrogation that had gone wrong.
Since the disappearance of Khashoggi, Kushner's close relations with the Saudi Crown Prince have been the subject of close scrutiny. Kushner, whose White House portfolio includes Middle East business, has also been the driving force behind Trump's decision to make Saudi Arabia its first-ever overseas travel destination in May 2017 .
