While the Trump administration faces strong criticism regarding the use of tear gas by US Border Patrol officers at the southern border on the southern border, Homeland Security Department Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen, criticized the asylum seekers for their "illegality".
Appearing to defend his agency's response to the hundreds of migrants who approached the US-Mexico border on Sunday, Nielsen said she would "tolerate" any kind of "illegality" from anyone wishing to seek asylum in the United States.
In a statement posted on Twitter, Nielsen said the migrants "were attempting to violate legacy fence infrastructure along the border and were trying to harm CBP personnel by throwing projectiles."

In its own statement, CBP directly defended its use of tear gas, writing on Twitter that border patrol agents "deployed" the substance "to drive out" migrants "because of the risks to the security of the agents".
The agency claimed that several migrants had thrown projectiles at its agents, some hit by objects.
