  • A security guard shot and killed a man who entered the WTTG lobby, the local Fox station in Washington, DC on Monday afternoon.

  • Police said that the man was trying to enter the building and had broken the glass of the two studio doors.

  • "It's surreal to do a story about it," Lindsay Watts, a Fox5 journalist, told Twitter.

A security guard shot and killed a man who crossed two doors and entered the lobby of WTTG, the local Fox station in Washington, DC, Monday afternoon.

The suspect, George Odemns, 38, said he wanted Fox 5 to contact President Donald Trump, News4 sources said. The DC police commander, Melvin Gresham, said at a press conference that he could not confirm this possible motive.

According to Washington police, Odemns was attempting to enter the building located on Wisconsin Avenue, in the northwest, on Harrison Street. He expelled the glass from two doors and was able to enter the hall.

A female security guard asked Odemns to stop while he was going to the main building, according to police reports. When he did not stop, she fired.

Sources also told News4 that the guard had tried to control Odemns with pepper spray.

Odemns was not armed, Gresham said. No one else was hurt.

Odemns was rushed to George Washington University Hospital with an upper-body injury. He remains in a stable but critical state.

Police say he was charged with second-degree robbery, punishable by two to fifteen years' imprisonment in the event of a conviction.

Odemns is homeless and has the habit of contacting local news channels, such as Fox 5, WUSA and News4, through lengthy emails. In August, he was charged with assaulting a police officer who was trying to break a verbal argument, according to police documents.

Fox 5 employees wrote on Twitter about the incident while it was unfolding.

"Everyone is fine," commented Jim Lokay, anchor. "Sources tell us that a suspect tried to enter our secure building. Security guards opened fire."

"The man was aware that he had been transported in an ambulance a few minutes ago, it is surreal to report on it," writes journalist Lindsay Watts around 15:30.

Mayor Muriel Bowser said she had met Police Chief Peter Newsham to discuss the situation.

Police said the call for the shooting was launched around 3 pm. They check the surveillance cameras in the area for more information.

No other information was disclosed immediately on the grounds of the intruder. The police did not identify the security officer or specify where she was.
