Sedgwick County MP Robert Kunze killed in a Sunday shootout

Sedgwick County Sheriff Jeff Easter confirms that 41-year-old MP Robert Kunze died Sunday afternoon in the line of duty.

According to Mr. Easter, MP Kunze will be remembered for his smile, infectious laughter and ability to interact with anyone and everyone in conversation.

Sheriff Easter says his office has no identity on the suspect at this time, but said the suspect was dead at the scene.

The sheriff said his office thought the suspect had been involved in three other incidents in the past 24 hours and had stolen a 40-gauge handgun.

A deputy from the Sedgwick County Sheriff's Office died following a shooting involving officers Sunday afternoon.

The Harper Police Service reports that the deputy minister was responding to a "suspicious call".

Police said the second officer arrived at the scene and found the deputy and suspect shot dead and found the deputy and a suspect unresponsive, both apparently suffering from gunshot wounds.

Both were declared dead at the scene, according to local agencies, including McPherson Police, Wichita Fire, Reno County Sheriff and Harper Police.

The roads surrounding the intersection of 21st and 295th West Streets remain closed.
